Political Strategies in Intercultural Translation: A Cognitive Psychology Perspective

Hu Weihua, a Level-2 Professor, holds a Doctorate and serves as a PhD supervisor. He is the academic leader of the National First-Class English Major and the head of the provincial-level First-Class Course in Translation Theory and Practice. A member of the Academic Committee at Xi’an Polytechnic University, a distinguished educator, and a leader in the foreign language academic field, Professor Hu also serves as the Director of the University Library. He is a member of the Translators Association of China, the Vice President of the Shaanxi Translators Association, and an Executive Council Member of several specialized committees under the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, including the committees on Educational Linguistics, Cognitive Translation Studies, Translation and Interpretation, and Corpus-based Translation Studies. Additionally, he is an Executive Director of the Translation Culture Research Society of the Association for Comparative Studies of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Cultures, and an Executive Director of the Shaanxi Provincial Association for International Educational Exchanges. Professor Hu has served as an expert reviewer for both the proposal and final evaluations of the National Social Science Fund, as well as a reviewer for Sino-Foreign Cooperative Education Institutions and Projects. He has also served as an evaluation expert for the Shaanxi Social Science Fund and Shaanxi Province’s Sino-Foreign Cooperative Education Institutions and Projects. Furthermore, he is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Applied Linguistics and Translation.

Professor Hu has published over 80 academic papers in CSSCI core journals and other major domestic and international journals, and has authored or translated more than 20 works. He has led and completed one National Social Science Fund project, along with 15 provincial and ministerial-level research and educational reform projects. As the primary contributor, he has received six provincial and ministerial awards, including the Outstanding Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences from Shaanxi Province, the Shaanxi Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award, and the Education and Teaching Achievement Award from the China National Textile and Apparel Council. He has also won one First Prize, two Second Prizes, and two Third Prizes for Outstanding Humanities and Social Sciences Achievements in Shaanxi Province universities. Currently, Professor Hu is leading one Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund project and one Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Special Project.

The lecture-related study explores the pathways for implementing political strategies in intercultural translation and the role of translators' political strategies in multilateral intercultural communication. Highlighting the impact of the cultural turn on translation practices and emphasizing the importance of translators' competence, the study analyzes how factors such as translators' identity, ideology, global awareness, and intercultural competence influence the implementation of political strategies in intercultural translation and also investigates the application of cognitive psychology in this process. The research reveals that political strategies in intercultural translation are a multidimensional cognitive activity, involving language encoding, cultural understanding, and decision-making processes. Cognitive psychology offers scientific methods to aid translation practice, helping translators accurately convey information and achieve cultural adaptation in globalized cultural exchanges.
